she she she shines on . . .

cherie currie, lead singer of the first all girl group the runaways, has an updated version of her "neon angel: a memoir of a runaway" biography that drops today. complete with a forward by fellow runaway band member/guitarist extraordinaire joan jett, "neon angel" chronicles the runaways' story from cherie's point of view. complete with the requisite sex, drugs and of course, rock and roll. because what's a biography without those things?

available currently in hardcover from amazon.
we love rock and roll indeed.
keep on keepin' on long weekend stylers!

back in black

like most people, you probably have almost an entire wardrobe consisting of mostly dark clothes. and what is the absolute bummer about dark colored clothes? well, eventually, like the rose on the vine, like beauty, dark clothes fade.
completely wiping out the svelte and stylish factor in one fell swoop and relegatating that particular piece of dark clothing to either sleepwear or grubby, cleaning-out-the-garage wear.
oh, the betrayal.
rejoice dark colors! your time has come. while we're not sure why this particular laundry breakthough has taken this long to materialize, it is finally here: laundry detergent specifically for dark clothes.

stateside, both woolite and cheer have created special formulations for dark colored fabrics. you can try cheer dark colorguard laundry detergent, whose job it is specifically hold on to those dark dyes and prevent them from migrating to other, nearby pieces of clothing. woolite's entry into this new laundry detergent category is dark laundry fabric wash which promises to "maintain the look of your dark and black clothes" by preventing fading. both brands are available nationwide. across the pond, the UK has persil, with their formula that touts less fading on darker clothes. in france, look for MIR black to handle washing your deepest and darkest.

for those of you on fiscal lockdown, another effective and more DIY way to help "save" your darks from fading:

a. separate dark from light colors prior to washing

b. use cold water each and every time you wash darks

c. add 1 cup of table salt or vinegar to dark colored garments when washing dark items for the very first time (like a virgin!)

so fight the power, fight that powers that fade.

and on that note, we patiently await for the other great laundry innovation of the century: laundry that does itself.

konichiwa mochi!

a recent trip to cultural food phenom, yogurtland - which can kind of be likened to the fiscally challenged girl's version of pinkberry - brought me to try mochi rice cake pieces.

what in the world are mochi?

mochi are little pieces of rice cake, dusted with a very light sprinkling of fine powdered sugar. the particular ones i am referring to are like little short and stout opaque white cylinders. i had seen a little cup piled high at pinkberry but had absolutely no idea what those little cylinders could be. styrofoam? a gummy bearlike substance or a hard candy? sweet or sour? a japanese version of cap'n crunch? too afraid to look like some topping newbie to my pinkberry swirler, i just ask for the usual double raspberries.

enter yogurtland. yougurtland has at least 12 flavors on tap daily (a taste of today's offerings: dutch chocolate, madagascar vanilla, red velvet cake batter, green tea, creamy strawberry, pistachio, tart, cookies and cream, pomegranate and dulce de leche - there are a few more but memory is cloudy at the time of this writing), not to mention an insane topping bar that covers all the taste groups, chocolate, fruit, cookies, candy bars, chocolate, sprinkles, cheesecake, brownies, chocolate, chocolate sauce, cookie dough bites, mochi, coconut, gummies (worms AND bears), and nerds. not the bespeckled kind, the candy.

and amongst all the mouthwatering toppings, there sat the mochi - giving me a knowing wink from its little lucite bowl and saying slyly, "hey long weekend style. try me. i'm delicious. go ahead. just a spoonful. there you go. the first one is free. you'll be back for more. i know it."

so i tenatively placed a small heaping tablespoon of mochi topped my mini kilamanjaro of pomegranate yogurt and set off to the register to pay.

yogurtland is a pay-by-the-ounce establishment and 30 cents an ounce at that. my little cup of creamy cold goodness gets onto the scale and out pops the price for today's yogurty excursion: $2.10. $2.10 for what appears to be a large pomegranate yogurt topped with mochi rice cake pieces, oreo cookies, chocolate chips and smashed kit kat bar.

my children, bellies full of hunger from an afternoon photo shoot with a friend, eyeball my specially designed yogurt creation, despite having their own gargantuan cups of yogurt goodness of their own choosing sitting right in front of them. my daughter coyly asks to try a mochi. upon seeing his twin sister score one, brother decides he must also partake.

the verdict? now everyone's on board. mochi - a delicious, chewy jelly/gummy goodness that is really more about substance than flavor. the mochi rice cake bits seem to melt in your mouth, probably accounting for some of the novel, fun factor involved in eating them. being more of a neutral flavor, mochi rice cake pieces will probably be a perfect topping compliment to whatever flavor yogurt makes your socks roll up and down.

and long weekend stylers, be warned, mochi rice cake pieces are absolutely addictive.

i am already planning how i can get my hands on that entire lucite bowl of mochi at yogurtland without drawing astonished stares from customers and cashier alike.

eraser

ok, so i am notorious for having dark undereye circles. and i mean, deep dark looks like i went 12 rounds every day of my life dark circles. i have tried passing them off as allergy shiners but alas, when allergy season has passed, the dark circles remain. i think it may be hereditary but i more blame my kids who have stolen my youth with their up-all-night unsanctioned antics.
i have tried literally everything short of surgery to lighten these babies as i feel they make me look sooooooooooooooooo tired. and old. and sad.
enter erase paste by benefit. the clouds parted. the heavens sang. and my deep dark undereye circles soon became a thing of the past.
available in 3 tones, i opt for the middle one which is actually lighter than anything named "medium" should be. the smallest dab conceals/obliterates/makes history of these heinous dark circles. using a ring finger (this being the weakest digit and the one least likely to cause much damage to the delicate eye area), push in the erase paste, rolling finger from one side to the other, kinda like getting fingerprinted. this gentle pushing warms the erase paste and blends it into the skin like butter. i usually top with a darker (read: closer to my skin tone) concealer from rimmel, that sadly is only available in the UK and voila! hasta la bye-bye dark circles. a brand-new me.
and when a co-worker truthfully determines your age to be "no older than 28" - you know you've got a keeper on your hands. not the co-worker. the erase paste.
erase paste by benefit, $26 available in 3 shades online @ www.sephora.com or at benefit counters and stores nationwide.

candyfreak

a long weekend staffer read this one awhile ago but it recently appeared on our radar (again) as we are doing a future feature on candy bars from the late, great 70's.

"candyfreak" by aptly named author steve almond is a chocolately, gummy, gooey, delicious adventure through all the halls of candy. steve also goes across country to discover the sugary underbelly of some of america's smaller candy makers, who, sadly, are a dying breed up against today's big candy players (hershey's, cadbury's, et al) vying for shelf space in a real life game of candyland.

"candy freak" casts fond remembrances upon some of childhood favorites such as the marathon bar (who can forget chocolate and carmel goodness braided together complete with a ruler printed on the wrapper), bottle caps, razzles (a candy or a gum?), abba zabba and the chunky bar (disappointingly raisin and nut filled square hunk of milk chocolate. nuts and raisins are so NOT treats LWS readers) as well as pondering the coconut flake's participation in the candy market, the texture of which steve likens to dry skin.
as aforementioned, steve road trips it across the continental united states, discovering local candy bars made by small, mostly family run candy companies. the twin bing by palmer - they of the easter candy variety - which looks like king kong's ahem, balls, a cherry swathed in a coating of chocolate and filled with crushed nuts. the old faithful by owyhee, boyer's mallo cup - a marshmallow version of a reese's, peanut chews, the goo-goo cluster - a mash-up of chocolate, marshmallows and peanuts and the interesting nougatty-something filled idaho spud.

steve writes passionately about candy, almost like a longtime obsessed lover. or junkie. he apparently thinks about candy at least once an hour, he routinely has pounds of candy of all varieties at his finertips scattered throughout his home and an undisclosed warehouse plus steve writes funny. and we swear that is his real name, not a nom de plume.
just a word of caution: "candy freak" will make you hungry. hungry for candy. you'll be like a zombie but instead of brains, you'll want candy candy and more candy. almond's descriptions are so absoutely spot on, detailed and just plain good that you can almost taste what he's writing about. "candy freak" also makes for a great gift but do take care to include a very healthy supply of chocolate/gummy/carmel/nougat/peanut/coconut bars of goodness for the intended recipient.
check out steve's website for more of his wacky candy fueled humor: www.stevealmond.com/candyfreak.html
and mama says don't forget to brush.

moss mills

long weekend style has long been a fan of moss mills' botanical, flora and fauna themed jewelry.

available in luscious pinky rose gold, old school yellow gold and edgy sterling silver - there is something for everyone's tastes. owls, flowers, squirrels, deer, acorns, hearts, birds, anchors and even bulldogs abound in mills' whimsical jewelry. hanging from dainty chains. creating a perfect playful circle around one's digits. cuffs or dangly charm bracelets, delicately wrapping around your wrist, never to let go. moss mills' designs are quite intricate and definitely require a closer look.

one of our favs around the office is "ping pong" - a squirrel in profile. moss even did it up custom - allowing a staffer to get a rose gold charm with a sterling silver chain. there are so many cute designs, it's really difficult to choose. we are especially liking the "flirt" bracelet - 2 birds K-I-S-S-I-N-G in a tree. or the "leigh" necklace - a square filled to the brim with flowers. the "willa" ring is a sweet, solitary heart. or the "milla" - a large blooming rose that could also double as a weapon - the "milla' could do some serious damage if perhaps you were being mugged by an unsuspecting pocketbook thief. we're just sayin'.

826LA.org

826LA is a national organization started by writer, dave eggers that features free tutoring, creative writing programs for kids as well as afterschool workshops that offer kids the chance to express themselves through music, writing or the arts. currently, the 826LA organization numbers 7 brick and mortar storefronts across the nation with one here in our very own backyard, echo park.

yay!

the echo park location of 826LA is known as the time travel mart, with, you got it, a time travel theme. other storefronts are pirate themed, superhero themed - all aimed at kids. tutoring and workshops are held in the back office of each store and the store itself sells time travel supplies.
the volunteers at 826LA are an amazing bunch, really inspiring and nuturing these kids to express themselves in new ways, opening their minds to new experiences as well as preparing them for life with much needed skills such as writing and self confidence. and with the state of education really hitting the skids here in the US, a program like 826LA is an absolute godsend. especially for those families who might not otherwise have access to exposing their children to the arts.

you can volunteer your time or if you have the inclination, your dosh. for more information on 826LA, please do check out their website http://www.826la.org/. you'll also find a calendar of events for the time travel mart in echo park. and if you can, please support this awesome organization - the minds of the future are depending on it!

good to the last drop

since everyone is cutting corners and trying to scrimp and save in these absolutely trying financial times, long weekend style has some tips on how to make the most of those beauty products in your medicine cabinet . . .

- to get every last drop out of tube containers (you know the kind:toothpaste style but smaller, for items like zit cream, concealer, lip gloss, that kind of thing) cut off the flat end with scissors and use a cotton swab to extract that last bit of beauty goodness within. place the open tube in a ziploc bag to avoid the remaining product from drying out. this should allow you to squeeze at least another week's worth of product before having to invest in a brand new tube.

- save those foaming soap dispensers and make your own frothy hand soap by mixing 3 parts water to 1 part hand soap, stretching your refill bottle by a factor of 3 at least.

- turn shampoo, conditioner, lotion, dish soap or detergent bottles upside down, spout first into a cup or glass overnight to completely empty contents and voila! you may not need to go out right now for that shampoo/conditioner/lotion/dish soap/laundry detergent.

- make a colored lip balm from your favorite tube of lipstick by scraping out the nub and mixing it with vaseline in a small glass bowl then heating for 20 seconds in the microwave. the result can be poured into one of those little travel size pots.

- make your own scrub using baby oil or any other scented body oil with sea salt.

- multi use products - long weekend style loves it some products that do double, even triple duty. like MAC blushcreme or stila convertible color - blush, lip color, even eye shadow in a pinch and in one convenient totable compact. shea butter products are great moisturizers - for both dry skin, rough cuticles and parched hair. alot of shampoos are teaming up with conditioners to make a one-stop product that both cleans and conditions - great for the small real estate in one's shower plus this means less bottles ending up in already crowded landfills.

hopefully, better times are just around the bend, long weekend stylers. until then, we're just gonna have to get creative and stretch those dollars.

eat me!

ok, yesterday's alice in wonderland inspired post has to have a flippy, an "eat me" to balance out the "drink me" if you will.
and you are gonna like this . . .

the entire long weekend style staff were recently inducted into the kogi korean BBQ to-go truck craze by a "foodie-in-the-know". well, what exactly IS the kogi korean BBQ to-go truck anyways???

food trucks, formerly in another life known as "roach coaches" have been elevated to a new status - traveling restaurant. and this time out, with super delicious, gourmet offerings ranging from korean/mexican BBQ to dessert to mediterranean . kogi is just one of the few catering companies out there that has a fleet of 4 trucks (rojo, verde, azul and naranja, the 4 basic colors in spanish. the korean words for blue, green, red and yellow would probably be most difficult for the majority of us out there to pronounce. and pronounce correctly? ai-yai-yai. so spanish it is).

the 4 kogi trucks rove different socal 'hoods 6 days out of each week, offering no-frills but mouth watering eats to meat eaters and vegetarians alike. and for very affordable prices, LWS might add - very fortuitous for those with voracious appetites as everyone seems to be on fiscal lockdown these days.

so here's the deal: go to their website and find the truck nearest your home or place of employment. drive to location. park car. let nose lead you to the delicious smell of korean bbq. read menu. place order. wait impatiently for order to be ready while watching those who have already received their lunch order nosh on korean bbq awesomeness. receive order and get your tastebuds and stomach ready for the taste sensation.

bite. swallow. sigh with bliss. repeat.

LWS staffers chowed on korean bbq chicken tacos on fresh made just-perfectly-crispy corn tortillas with an absoutely amazing array of greens and such atop ($2) served in a simple brown paper boat. also consumed: the sliders: korean bbq beef on toasted mini buns ($5 for 2) covered once again in fresh greens goodness. yum yum yum. our foodie-in-the-know went with the fantastic korean bbq tofu and says that you MUST MUST MUST try it with the citrus juice (a blend of lemon, lime and orange juices) if the kogi truck servicing your area has any left! next time, we are totally going to the try the korean bbq beef quesadilla.

go to http://www.kogibbq.com/ to check out the scheduled locations and timetable for each of the 4 kogi trucks. cash only. items priced from $2-7 each as well as a small selection of soft drinks and chips for $1.50.
bon appetit!

drink me!

ahh, ramune - THE absolutely delicious carbonated japanese soda. original flavor ramune tastes a bit like lemon-lime (think 7-UP or sprite) but is super HIGHLY carbonated. ramune soda also has the fine distinction of being the only soft drink that is marble activated.

what? marble activated? are you insane, long weekend style?

to open a ramune, one must use the little cap device to push the marble into the bottle - the marble which has been cleverly held in place solely by the carbonation of the drink itself. plunk! the marble falls into the fizzy goodness below and now the challenge is to drink the ramune without the marble falling back into the neck of the bottle, obstructing the river of lemon-lime refreshment.

ramune can be found at japanese grocery stores and restaurants, if you be so curious to try one. ramune also comes in a wide variety of flavors including: bubble gum, mango, watermelon, strawberry and strangely enough, wasabi and curry, although not together.
drink up!

ring ring ring around . . .

ring holders have recently become a must find obsession for the long weekend staff. the current stand offerings out there are slim pickings - we were able to unearth either a gold toned cat with a long upraised tail or a white ceramic hand. while retro can be awesome sauce when done correctly, somehow these 2 designs just don't seem to cut it in the style and substance department.

enter feel good home. they are single handedly redefining the little things.their designs are contemporary yet with a touch of whimsy and and simplistic beauty.

feel good home is based in hong kong, where their approach to design is functionality and fun - the results being fantastically enriching to everday life.

take for instance, this stylized twig ring holder. perfect. exactly what we were looking for. made of a white poly resin with a weighted bottom, this is a ring stand you'll be proud to have on your sinktop or in your boudoir. the twig ring holder is man made yet retains a hand made, natural feel. it features 3 separate branches in varying lengths that can each easily stack several rings - be they delicate or chunky-funky.

and at an amazing $7.95, it won't break the proverbial bank, a good thing in these financially precarious times. the twig ring stand by feel good home is available online and in-stores at crate and barrel sibling store, CB2 - http://www.cb2.com/. check out the complete offering of feel good home housewares at www.feelgood.hk/feelgood_book.html.

zombies and mummies and vampires - oh my!!!

word on the street is that the much beloved fiction category has given birth to a new genre of literature sure to tantalize readers of all ages.

imagine yourself in your local b. dalton, borders or barnes and noble bookstore. now envision the classics you read in high school on one side - emma, pride and prejudice, canterbury tales, hamlet et al. on the other, sci-fi/horror - monsters, zombies, outer space, the unexplained. then somehow, someway, under the cover of night, in some sort of skirmish, those literary classics were tossed together with the zombie/monster/mummy section and from that night of paper passion, sprang this new literary genre. a mash-up. your peanut butter in my chocolate. that sort of thing.

well, what is this new fangled genre of fiction, say you? the titles of said books will probably better explain the genre than any actual explanation we here at long weekend style could assign. so here's a few to whet your whistle:
-pride and prejudice and zombies
-sense and sensibility ans sea monsters
-abe lincoln, vampire hunter
-adventures of huckleberry finn and zombie jim
-android karenina
-robin hood and friar tuck:zombie killers, a canterbury tale
-the undead of oz
-alice in zombieland
-mansfield park and mummies

we could list more but you probably get the picture.

and we just heard that tim burton's next feature film project is . . . wait for it, abe lincoln: vampire hunter. oh, yeah.

who knew our 16th preseident had a night shift job?

oh, a brave new world indeed.

friday in da house!!!

and the MVP award goes to . . . baby wipes

drumroll, please . . . the most valuable player award goes to the unsung hero of cleanliness: baby wipes.

yes, you read right. baby wipes.

baby wipes ROCK. no bones about it. really. whether they be the thick-as-towels huggies or in bulk from costco, baby wipes are an indespensible part of making everyday life a little cleaner. plus, you can find them just about anywhere. even in a foreign country, because where there's babies, there are baby wipes. and there are babies all over the globe. and they're so darned conveniently packaged these days (baby wipes, not babies themselves) making the transport of baby wipes e-zee peezeee. we only wish there was a giant baby wipe that could have helped in the exxon-valdez oil spill in the '90's.

so to reiterate: baby wipes, not only for baby's wittle bottom but more, so much MORE!

here are a few of the countless ways baby wipes have brightened and cleaned up our day:

- removed all traces of the dreaded dorito or cheeto fingers after bag binge
- wiped off a whole face of make-up in one fell swoop
- got rid of the junk in your trunk (AKA gig butt to you musicians)
- cleaned feet on a flip flop wearin' day
- post workout wipedown, if you forgot your towel
- general face/hand wipedown, especially for the under 5's
- general hand wipedown for the over 5's
- a must bring to rest stop bathroom
- helped soak up that salsa spill that your shirt had for lunch
- wipe off muddy or beachy sand doggy paws
- made history of the bbq sauce that your face and hands are smothered in from those lip smackin' louisana short ribs
- quick clean make-up brushes or paint brushes
- soda spill alert on car's leather seats!

whatever the case or mishap, never fear, baby wipes will be there.

nail polish goes high tech!

nail technology has hit a pinnacle, dear long weekend readers. and we don't know why something so good took so long.

enter rimmel (yes, they of "the london look") with their PRO nail enamel. it lasts 10 days. comes in a literal rainbow of colors. it's categorized as "professional finish", always a good thing. plus, rimmel PRO is reasonably priced for these fiscally trying times. it boasts "mistake free application" - who doesn't love that? rimmel PRO also contains lycra, for um, added elasticity? yes, that's it. extra elasticity - because no one wants quitters for nails.

and . . . for the grand finale, rimmel PRO nail enamel has this superfantastic rounded edge brush that neatly mimics those little rounded corners of one's nailbed. genius. with the traditional squared off bottom brush, nail polish remover and a cotton swab were necessary to achieve that salon perfectness.

rest assured, you can go DIY with the rimmel PRO.

obscura day - Los Angeles

do you like the unusual? the esoteric? the out-of-the-way? the un-everyday?
we so do.

well, long weekend style has our collective ear to the ground and have unearthed an upcoming event called obscura day, defined as "a day of expeditions, backroon tours, and hidden treasures in your own hometown". this year, obscura day is march 20th, a day to celebrate obscure locations the world over. various city tours are manifesting from locations such as damascus, detroit, shanghai and paris. lucky for long weekend style readers, there is going to be an obscure LA tour here right here is nearby echo park.

on saturday, march 20th, join the lovely miss lauren rock as she guides you to little known los angeles haunts (haunts. not haunted. that's a different tour, people) via private bus. atlas obscura and the echo park time travel mart are in cohoots and have organized this fantabulous bus tour that will take adventure seekers to see some not-so-usual LA sites: venture out to galco's soda pop stop for a taste of bubbly drinks from days of yore then go wild and enjoy a box style lunch at griffith park's old zoo, complete with old school 1930's animal cages. after lunch, visit the artic north via velaslavasay panorama - get a 360 degree view as well as explore a carnivorous plant garden - watch those fingers! finish the day with a puppet show at the famous bob barker marionette theater in downtown los angeles, one of the few remaining dedicated marionette theaters in the country.

thanks a mucho and enjoy obscura day!

copenhagen is the new music epicenter

2 tracks that we here at long weekend style are lovin' right now . . .

first up, from the CD, the last resort, comes "moan" from copenhagen artist, trentemoller (nope, not a typo, it's one word. we did check this. it's actually anders trentemoller although we don't have the cute little mark that goes through the "o" making it look waaaaay more international, citizen of the world).

the song gets deep under your skin with a hypnotic synth groove and ambient dreamy vocals by ane trolle:
www.last.fm/music/+noredirect/Trentemoller+Feat+Ane+Trolle/+videos/+1-UXlrToEic9o
and if you are feeling especially emotionally resistant today, you can watch the video - a sad ode to laika, the cute little dog the russians sent up into space in '57. it is sad, so be prepared, especially you animal lovers. and it's also little cheesy because, well, you'll see why.

the other track that we're feelin' around the long weekend style office is "the one you left behind" by the also-from-copenhagen duo, asger baden and peter leth who make up the crooked spoke. a dreamy dark, haunting song that has dramatic, drawn out leonard cohen-like vocals. this one really hits it out of the park creating a lazy, woozy atmosphere that you can easily get lost in. have a listen here: www.last.fm/music/The+Crooked+Spoke/_/The+One+You+Left+Behind+%28Klovn+Edit%29?autostart

long weekend style, over and out from copenhagen, denmark.
