8 tracks

do you love music? check.
do you remember the audio innovation called the 8 track? check.
for some of us, the term 8 track brings back a sense of nostalgia: summertime spent riding around in the backseat of your mom's car in the 70's, a car with probably only lapbelts at best, the paltry A/C blowing meagerly cool air, the dark tinted window film peeling back from the window corners and the 8 track going, going, going until it reaches that one song. the one unfortunate song that gets cut in half then continues as the 8 track tape switches over to the next program.
well, fast forward from the 8 track, 30 odd years later and we've arrived at pandora. what's pandora you ask? pandora was a fantastic free online service with streaming music and listener created "stations". you'd type in an artist or song, and the little pandora logarithmic algorhithim machine would create a radio station playlist of similiar artists with the occasional advert song thrown in. as all good things come to an end, sadly, pandora is now allowing each user only 40 hours of free music per month. and what's an online listener to do? ration out those 40 hours making sure you pause your music before hitting up the bathroom or water cooler? only listen when you're doing email or facebooking? pony up the monthly fees for unlimited listening?

psst, hey music lover. yes, you over there. i'll share a little secret with you: http://www.8tracks.com/.

a fantastic free site that is made up of playlists submitted by music lovers the world over. you'll hear music you love love love and hopefully some new tunage that you didn't even know existed paired together in a minimum 30 minute mix. you can type in an artist or song of your choice, 8tracks.com will reward you by listing mixes containing that particular song or artist. or, you can search by genre and 8tracks has got all the bases covered from lo-fi to alt to jazz to soundtracks and back again.

one of my personal favorite mixers is a music afficiando going by the handle "anotherlatenight" and whose range of music choices is absolutely astounding and inspiring.

all for free. at least for now. such awesomeness, it is not to be believed.

go. listen. now.

and while you're at it, get one of their fantabulous t-shirts and help support online music!
